How to: Adjust your Goals

We have all had a change in our routine and a shift in what we are doing day to day. The last month or so has not gone as we originally would have planned for. We have all had a shift in our priorities. We have all had a different experience.

However, whatever is going on in your world right now, don’t throw your old goals out. Take a break, relax. Take a look at your goals and see how they can be adjusted, or how they can be postponed guilt-free.

Ask yourself :

  • What were my priorities before?
  • What did I intend to focus on?
  • What are my priorities now?
  • What do I need to focus on this month?
  • Which of my previous goals can I still incorporate into my current situation?
  • Which of my previous goals do I need to put on hold?
  • Which of my previous goals are no longer relevant?

Adjust your expectations. Things may be different now, but you can still accomplish a version of your goals in different ways.

If you are using our goals planner it is easy to readjust your goals based on a goals analysis using the above questions. Just follow these easy steps:

  1. Carry out your Monthly Review and update your Progress Tracker so that you can take stock about where you are right now. Ask yourself the above questions if you haven’t already done so.
  2. Review each of your goals (and next steps) in turn using your responses and think about whether the goal remains the same, and if any of the steps that you will take to achieve the goal will change.
  3. In the goals notes section, adjust the SMART description of your goal and any time frames or milestones accordingly.

Revisit the definition of success and your image of what success looks like for each of your goals. Is it the same or do you now have something else in mind? How are you redirecting the energy and passion you still have?

And remember it’s okay.

Most of us will have to adjust our goals and prioritise self-care.
